An Israeli minister gave warning yesterday that the Gaza faces a "holocaust" if Islamist militants there do not end their daily barrages of home-made Qassam rockets, and their increasing use of Iranian-built Grad missiles.
“The minister used the Hebrew term 'shoah' which means 'catastrophe' and in this context does not refer to the 'the Shoah' - the Holocaust,” he said.
So are we done with your false/misleading story now?
What's false or misleading besides Mr Vilnai?
Cheap shot, and infantile, Joe.
The point is made. The use of the term Shoah has been deliberately and maliciously misrepresented. If you don't like what Israel is doing at least base your criticism on the facts, not childish wordplay.
Type define:Shoah into google. Every resulting definition mentions the [H]olocaust. Nice try, Wright?
The use of the term "holocaust" is usually restricted to descriptions of the Nazi genocide of the Jews in Europe in the Second World War, and many Israelis resent its use in any other context.
I'm not the one defining the word. So, the minister is either a psychopath or an idiot?
It's because you're Googling in English you dunderhead. You will only find references to the link between the English word holocaust and its Hebrew equivalent. It does not reflect on the more general use of the word in Israel. Try Googling it in Ivrit and you'll get a different answer.
Haha. Here's the google search:
Again:
The use of the term "holocaust" is usually restricted to descriptions of the Nazi genocide of the Jews in Europe in the Second World War, and many Israelis resent its use in any other context.
http://www.milon.co.il/general/general.php?term=shoah:
(ש"ע) השואה, הטבח ההמוני של אזרחי אירופה ובעיקר שואת וטבח יהודי
use google translator to translate "(ש"ע) השואה, הטבח ההמוני של אזרחי אירופה ובעיקר שואת וטבח יהודי" to english:
(N.) the Holocaust, mass massacre of civilians and especially Europe שואת Otbh Jewish Europe by the Nazis
Type shoah into google news search and you find hundreds of articles referring to the Holocaust by Israeli press outlets.
The term still has wider connotations in Ivrit than the very narrow one you are claiming.
Any native Ivrit speakers possibly weigh in here?
The Guardian reports:
The use of the term "holocaust" is usually restricted to descriptions of the Nazi genocide of the Jews in Europe in the Second World War, and many Israelis resent its use in any other context.
If you go to galveston and you say hurricane people will think of the general weather formation. If you say 'the hurricane' they will think of the storm that wiped the city out 100 years ago. Same for New Orleans.
What you are trying to suggest is that a word like war can only refer to one war. Disaster can only refer to one disaster. In Israel they say 'the catastrophe' to refer to the holocaust, simply because that is the easiest way to communicate what they are talking about. That phrase does not omit the word catastrophe from their vocabulary. It still fully means catastrophe and only implicates the holocaust when the phrase 'the shoah' is used. Even then it is not the formal name, rather it is the way to say it without really saying it.
What the official said is it will be a catastrophe for the people of gaza if the choose to remain on the path they are on. A factually correct statement.
Given that Israel has the means of wiping palestine off the map and they arent and they are in fact going out of their way to avoid casualties in the densely populated cities I really cant see how anyone could suggest that the Israeli's are systematically going about killing the entire arab race. So neither in word nor action is Israel going about a holocaust.
Tough talk on the part of Israel, but I don't think they mean it in the sense that they are going to drag Palestinians out of their homes and shoot them into ditches. I think this colorful talk is used to tell Hamas, a recognized terrorist group that no quarter will be shown to them if the fighting continues. Hamas can stop the rocket attacks, but now Israel is compelled to destroy as many catches as possible, if they had done it after the bombings and before the invasion, they could have probably saved them for another day. So sad, these people must have a death wish.
Tough talk followed by tough action, in my opinion. With the Israeli constructed wall around Gaza and the blockade of medicines, food and other necessary goods -- Gaza kinda resembles one gigantic concentration camp. Gazans that disagree with Hamas or wish to flee the violence are unable to. They're locked in to starve and suffer through the violence.
Haaretz reports that, as Israeli ground forces entered Gaza yesterday, “hundreds of shells were fired, including cluster bombs aimed at open areas.”
FireDogLake’s Siun writes, “The use of cluster bombs — which have a large footprint when initially dropped and then remain a threat for decades — in a location like the Gaza Strip which is so packed with people is horrifying.

Sounds like mass punishment of civilians and militants alike.
St. Joseph I would just like to commend you for exposing the truth on Israel. You have so many good articles posted. Hopefully, these people will give in to the truth, eventually.
This is the kind of online conversation that is trying to ignore the wolf and go in detailed absurds from the dictionary about his nice fur
If the Israeli minister was threatening of something worse than the igoing massive raids on crowded town, and his threatening was not of holocaust, then what EXACTLY he was threatening of??
I think he was threatening to go in heavy on Hamas. It's exactly what we see now - attacks on Hamas personnel, their strongholds, their weapons stockpiles, their infrastructure, the tunnels used for smuggling. An attack strong enough to deal Hamas a very serious blow.
What I object to is the disingenuous seizing of his use of the word Shoah (which can mean exactly what I just described) to suggest that Israel would be indulging in ethnic cleansing. You know - lining up men, women and children, shooting them and throwing them into mass graves as the Nazis did to the Jews.
Obviously he didn't mean that. But any opportunity to demonise Israel, eh? It doesn't have to be fair or accurate.
Is that what your opinion all about ? ''any opportunity to demonise Israel'' And why is that in your suggestion? Could it be that Israel is wrong and aggressive or the news lie and every critic is intending to demonize an innocent state .......Why should I care anyway , you can believe what you believe and I can keep taking sleeping bills for another week to erase Gaza bloody pictures from my mind not to go in nightmares
Joseph, there is no wall around Palestine, look again, there is the Jordan border, wide open, and Syria, again no wall. The wall is to keep terrorists out, not to keep people in. I meet Palestinians all the time here in the US, and if they were in 'concentration camps' then how did they get here? They has passports, and they had money.
I think this is being blown out of perportion. Do you advocate that Israel continue to allow terrorists to blow up their civilian buses, universities, ice cream shops? Of course you don't. That is the purpose of the wall, and it is not yet complete.
Viva la Bestia Imperialista!!!

¿Que?

Me llamo es no Manuel. Me llamo Denisio.
Y tu? Como te llamas?
Ah, no conoces el programa de television "Fawlty Towers" con el famoso John Cleese?
Not in America. They showed it years later on PBS, but I never watched it.
Shame. Manuel is from Bacelona and says "que?" a lot.
My original comment was a response to the seeder's tagline.
